In Every Corner, In Every Moment
Just a few minutes ago, I had an opportunity to gather with church brothers and sisters at Deacon Matthew's son Sandy Shek's place for a short family service conducted by Preacher Michael Chan. The service was based on Luke 2.25-30 talking about how Simeon, knowing he was about to die, was ready, because he had already seen God's Salvation in the child Jesus.
Preacher Chan continue to use several verses of the bible and testimonies of how brethren had seen visions of their loved ones, through which God is communicating to us a message of comfort. Indeed, the truth revealed in the bible is comforting. Amen.
Afterward Deaconess Martha Shek, his daughter, started to talk about her father, close family and friends were invited to bring to mind the good memories that should be remembered of our Deacon Matthew. Then Deacon Matthew's beloved wife also shared nature of her husband's steadfast faith. He displayed such genuine and heartfelt faith through the singing of hymns and prayer, as well as offering to God.
What was special when she was talking about him was that he would have a set time to pray in the evening. And no matter what was to happen, whether his wife was around or not, he would sing three hymns. She said though he saw not very well, but he would turn the pages of the hymnbook carefully and sing three hymns before he prayed.
This brought to my mind in his singing of hymns he was truly singing them to God. For when his wife and others were not around, who else would he be singing to? Though matured at 82, his mind and heart was a child's one, like as Jesus taught. He sang to his Heavenly Father.
As this image passed, I remembered in Revelation such a passage: "After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands" (Rev 7.9). What would they be doing in service to God?
Another passage comes to mind: "Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who by night stand in the house of the Lord! Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord" (Psa 134.1-2). Then this passage feels it must be joined to another one: "Of Jeduthun...prophesied with a harp to give thanks and to praise the Lord...for the service of the house of God...the first lot...twenty-fourth [lot]"
My heart rejoices with great joy. For with this testimony and message that comes to my mind, is that we can and must sing, no matter where we are. Whether in silence in our heart or out loud through our mouth, at church or in the privacy of our own home, with a multitude or by ourselves, at home or away, at work or play, in studying or working, we can praise the Lord and we can serve! Hallelujah!!
Though our days be numbered, the number of breaths we may draw be few, let those valuable breaths be used often, with soul and spirit, whilst we are in this tent of a body, to offer praise to God; for He is with US!!! Brethren, spread the word: "We can serve right in our very own homes too!" Altogether now: Let us open and lift our hymns books and voices, sending messages to ring through time eternal!!!
